Katharine Parker: Ugh! What a slob.
Tess McGill: You were so smooth with him. I probably would have…
Katharine Parker: Never burn bridges. Today’s junior prick, tomorrow’s senior partner. So, how do you think the party’s going?
Tess McGill: Pretty well, I think. Should I stop serving now?
Katharine Parker: Better make one more round.
Tess McGill: Right. Katharine Parker: I’d love to help you but… we can’t busy the quarterback with passing out the Gatorade.
from the movie Working Girl, with Melanie Griffith, and Sigourney Weaver
Are YOU a Quarterback who’s been wasting their time “passing out the gatorade?” Do you excel at something, but then find yourself spending most of your time plugging away at the stuff you’re not so great at, thinking you have to do it all yourself? We all love to contribute. We all want to make a difference. You are in business, doing what you love, so you can serve others. Well … why not let them serve you too?
I have some clients that know how to do something, but they realize it is simply not an effective use of their time or energy, so they choose to hire someone else to do it, so they can spend time doing what they do best. Other clients don’t know where to start, and don’t want to take the time to learn one more thing, adding more to their already overflowing plates. We can think that it is a luxury to outsource, but people who know the true value of their time choose to spend it doing what they love, and doing what they do best.
If you need help with tasks that you don’t know how to do, don’t love doing, or don’t have the time to do, pass them on. Hire a painter instead of painting it yourself. Donate instead of wasting your time and energy with a garage sale. Send your shirts to the laundry if you don’t love ironing — or doing laundry, for that matter. Hiring a Virtual Assistant to get your life organized while you are busy “scoring touchdowns” in your life (okay, I’ll stop with the football analogy now, I promise), is an easy way to be more productive. You can’t do it all alone, and you don’t have to.
